Do: Go there
Don’t: Send people ahead, catch the bus from the city and assume you can hitch the remainder of the way from Foster
Do: Enjoy the wallabies, kookaburras, galahs and parrots
Don’t: Let someone who’s never built a tent try and erect a large canvas four-part family dome which hasn’t been out of its owners loft for five years on his own
Do: Get down to the beach near Tidal River on a clear low tide night and check out the stars twinkling on the sand
Don’t: Be surprised when the wind whips up, your friend’s large canvas four-part family dome which hasn’t been out of its owners loft for five years collapses, and you have to spend the next four hours battling the elements to keep it standing

Do: Go walking at dawn and dusk to check out the wombats: cuddly, fat little freaks
Don’t: Leave food out otherwise you’ll be seeing them again late at night when you least expect, or want, it
Do: Take loads of booze and food
Don’t: Listen to people telling you to put back some of the booze you’ve grabbed off the shelf at the drive-in bottle-o on the way there
Do: Stay up late to marvel at the Milky Way. Apparently, the dark patches you can see are black holes swallowing up nearby stars
Don’t: Expect Squeaky Beach to squeak

Do: Enjoy as many of the walks on offer. The more adventurous you are, the more you’ll be rewarded
Don’t: Get lost

The Squeaky Beach does actually make squeaking noises if you walk on it in a certain way (wear shoes and apply some pressure).
Glad to read this. We spent much of our first xmas here being told that if we enjoy camping we MUST go to Wilson’s Prom. It’s definitely on our list of things ‘to do’, but there was also mention of a long, long walk from the point where you have to leave your car, and that kind of seems to be at odds with the take a tent and lots of food and lots of beer mantra…
Am I right?
Hi Mike – sorry for the delay in replying – got a bit slack with this either side of Christmas and New Year so trying to fill in the many gaps now. We stayed at Norman’s Beach near Tidal River and you park where you camp and are very very close to the beach. There’s a pretty good cafe and shop there too. And if you get better weather than we did you might not need as much booze to get you through. Will be posting about 90 Mile Beach soon too – further out and more remote, but well worth a look too
