We like a challenge, so when our eyes alighted on the Bogan Burger on the Napier Hotel’s bar menu, the gauntlet was well and truly thrown down. Thankfully, Bruce also likes to try new things, so opted for the smoked roo-topped schnitzel.
How Fran must wish she’d done the same before attempting to plough through:
- large bread bun
- chicken schnitzel
- 6oz minute steak
- fried egg
- potato cake (the single most rancid thing to adorn a plate in recent times – about 1% potato, 99% lard)
- bacon
- relish
- beetroot
- mayonnaise
- lettuce
- pineapple
with a side of fat wedges, naturally.
The man across from us – in a spot of unusual training for the Melbourne marathon – wolfed his down in minutes; Fran, however, was defeated.
As for the Napier, on the corner of Napier and Moor Streets in Collingwood, it’s the most pubby pub we’ve been to since arriving in Melbourne. Bloody marvellous, just treacherous for those planning a long life.
